Activities

The Pontesbury Broadplace will aim to provide education, information and entertainment opportunities using computers, gain access to the Internet via Broadband, and will provide learning and information to novices or the skilled, in a friendly environment. Volunteers from the community will be needed to assist in running and supervising the facilities.

The use of the computers will be free to members but there will a nominal charge to cover printing expenses. Clubs and groups will also be able to book sessions. The equipment will be located in the Public Hall, and is likely to consist of:
  • 6 Wireless laptops complete with keyboards/mice/rollerball mouse
  • Broadband Internet telephone line
  • Data projector for large events
  • Large and small projection screens
  • Colour Laser printer
  • Midi Keyboard and music mixing software
  • Microphone/Headset
  • CD Writing facilities
  • Digital video camera
  • Scanner and image editing software
  • Web cam and messenger software
  • MS Office + leisure software eg Cross stitch patterns, garden design, genealogy etc.
  • If sufficient interest is shown in other areas, e.g digital photography, Adobe Photoshop and other software packages may also be made available.

There is also a possibility that a wireless link can be made to St George’s Church, so that groups using the church’s West End Room, can also benefit from Broadband access to the internet.

Below are details of what Shropshire Broadplaces are doing - any of these are possible in Pontesbury, depending on space/time available and volunteers willing to organise them....:

But the emphasis here is on the number of helpers who can volunteer to organise all or some of the above activities.

One way of helping to fund replacements for the future is to rent out some or all of the eqipment to local business who may wish to use it for metings, or seminars.

Typical business group

Our first open day began on 1st March 2007, and we were open from 2p.m. to 5p.m., and again from 6p.m. to 9p.m. There was a great deal of interest, and most or all of our computers were busy for both sessions. Here are some pictures - N.B. clicking on a picture will reveal a higher quality image.
